Dear Students,
I want to take up some space to share about my teaching methods. I once had a student let me know that he just didn’t understand my class. He was hesitant to say this; felt he was an “asker of stupid questions.” It was nothing short of an honor that he did indeed tell me. The reflection I did as a result of his inquiry was wildly eye-opening for me in a number of ways.
You've likely heard the saying "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." This proverb translates to an Albert Einstein quote: "Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think."
There are many basic concepts that you need to learn, and I am here to teach them. Knowledge of these foundational elements is important in the real world and for moving into new realms. In my class, we go beyond, and then some.
I believe education isn't just a collection of facts you read in a textbook or memorize for a test.
Education is alive. It's full of questions, mysteries, and even mistakes that lead to incredible discoveries.
As your teacher, my aim isn't focused on giving you answers, but rather to help you form questions, to challenge perceptions, and to think critically about the world around you.
I’m not here just to prepare you for the next exam; I’m here to help you see the universe in new ways, to understand the unseen forces shaping everything from the tiniest particles to the largest galaxies.
You might notice that in this classroom, we don’t stick to the usual script. My students explore, debate, observe, wonder, guess, accomplish, fail. In turn, we build up to a level of thinking and learning that bypasses state educational standards.
Knowing how to figure out how and why things work is a powerful tool. Questioning, failing, and confusion are all parts of discovering, learning, and understanding. That’s the mindset I want you to embrace - push against what’s comfortable, ask questions no one else is asking, and be unafraid to try a new path. This process takes courage. Guess what? You already have courage, and I see it growing each day.
I can't emphasize this enough:
As a teacher, I’m not just interested in you simply knowing more; I want you to discover different ways to think. This means taking risks in your learning, digging deeper than the textbook, and engaging with your learning as the dynamic and thrilling process that it is. You might find this approach uncomfortable at first, but that’s okay, as discomfort is a sign that you’re growing.
